The Warning
In 1961, outgoing U.S. President and former five-star general Dwight D. Eisenhower famously warned his people of the unwelcome influence of the ‘Military-Industrial-Complex’. He was referring to the powerful conglomeration of corporations that profited from the machinations and industrial output of the previous four decades of warfare.
“...In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military–industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist…’
The message was clear: beware the influence of corporations with massive profit incentives. They will eventually influence society and government to the detriment of the people.
The Medical-Pharmaceutical-Agricultural-Complex
Today, I believe society is fighting an analogous battle against a similarly amorphous entity, which I have coined the Medical-Pharmaceutical-Agricultural-Complex (MPAC).
Just like the Military-Industrial-Complex, there exists an entrenched industry of corporations that profit from the industrialized production of disease-causing food products and their pharmaceutical ‘solutions’.
Instead of selling guns, bombs and planes, these corporations have become rich selling the products responsible for the widespread prevalence of chronic disease in every country around the world.
Selling the Poison
These multi-national corporations span the length of the supply chain of processed food, including manufacturers of:
Agricultural grains: corn, soy, wheat, canola, (incl. genetically modified crops)
Agro-industrial chemicals: nitrogen-based fertilizers, chemical herbicides, insecticides and fungicides
Industrial foods: high-fructose corn syrup, poly-unsaturated seed oils, sugar
Industrial food substitutes: fake meat, insect protein
Industrial food additives: artificial flavorings, colors, fragrances, emulsifiers, etc
Consumer-facing junk foods: candy, sugary beverages, breakfast cereals
What do they have in common? All profit in some way from the continued consumption of hyper-processed industrial foods. A business model predicated on the initiation and perpetuation of chronic disease.
Selling the ‘Antidote’
And what happens when people become sick on the industrial sludge and environmental contamination of their food? Don’t worry, there is another immensely profitable industry ready to sell you the ‘antidote’. Big Pharma.
Pharmaceutical companies: opioids, statins, SGLT2 inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors…
The Pharmaceutical industry profits from medicating epiphenomena of chronic disease - pills to reduce blood pressure, pills to reduce blood sugar, pills to reduce cholesterol, pills to reduce inflammation and painkillers for when your body starts to break. All the while downplaying or obfuscating the the true patho-physiological causes, which would obviate the need for medication.
They sell you the poison, then sell you the antidote.
Agriculture and Pharma exist in an unholy symbiosis of profit and illness, junk food and medications, fast food joints and pharmacies. Hundreds of millions, maybe billions of people are caught up in this tragic cycle of overfeeding and disease. Obese, diabetic, depressed and in chronic pain. Continuously eating junk food made of processed carbs, seed oils and sugar. On a laundry list of long term medications.
You Were Lied To
The past 50 years has an unending episode of public gaslighting.
Saturated fat causes heart disease, eat a grain-based diet, eat polyunsaturated oils to lower cholesterol, Eat Less Move More, red meat causes cancer, eggs are bad for you, Calories In Calories Out, wholegrains, plant-based diet…
In truth, the food you were told to eat causes illness and much of the medical advice you are given (to treat the illness from the food you were told to eat) is unnecessary. If it isn’t abundantly clear, these multi-national corporations Do Not Care About You.
Corporate Capture
How was this possible? For the past 50 years and prior, corporations of the Medical-Pharmaceutical-Agricultural-Complex have actively influenced government policy, nutritional guidelines, medical practice and public opinion away from preventive health and towards a junk food environment and ‘prescription pad’ medicine.
Exactly how this occurred is a story in itself. There are many great books on the topic here, here and here. Suffice to say, the corporate strategy involves regulatory capture, scientific capture and a massive amount of commercial propaganda.
I will say a word about those most complicit in the hijacking of medical and nutritional guidelines for corporate profit.
The medical profession bears a heavy burden for allowing its collective impartiality to be bought and paid for. It was sold out by professors and clinician-researchers who made faustian pacts with Big Pharma to endorse a medication-heavy clinical interventionism. Consequently, the average MD has become a credentialed prescription bot, forced not to dig too deeply into the pathological process, but to simply stick bubble gum in the cracks in the form of a pill prescription.
The longer the life of the prescription, the better.
Resisting the MPAC
Resisting a global conglomerate of multi-national corporations and their processed food agenda sounds difficult, perhaps impossible. It’s not. In reality, the MPAC is only sustained by unquestioning and mindless consumption of individual people.
The opposite of a processed food addict would be someone who eats only fresh, whole food. Someone who is aware of the quality of their food and how it was grown. As a result, this person would be physically active, healthy, happy and have no need for prescription pills. This person generates zero profit for the Medical-Pharmaceutical-Agricultural-Complex.
What You Can Do
Be that person.
Be skeptical. Resist the mainstream programming. Seek dissenting professional opinions (from a low carb or metabolic physician), listen to your body and make your own mind up when it comes to matters of health, while not ignoring proper medical care if you are unwell.
Dump the hyper-processed carbs, sugar and seed oils, replacing them with fresh, wholefoods, mainly animal meat and fat.
Pledge to purchase food and groceries from farmers markets, farm-door shops, community-supported agriculture initiatives of organic and regenerative farms.
Look after your physical health by performing resistance and weights training, exposing your skin to the sunlight.
If possible, be self-sustaining in your own food needs. Raise animals, grow vegetables, keep chickens in a regenerative manner, free from industrial herbicides and agricultural inputs. Or befriend your local community member who does.
These are all radical acts of resistance in the face of a corporate totalitarian behemoth hell bent on enslaving you through addiction to their industrial junk and unnecessary prescription medications.
Every purchasing decision is a vote placed, a shot fired and a battle fought.
Have no quarter, because in the backrooms and offices of these multi-national corporations the marketing departments, CEOs and lobbyists are working away, gaining influence, coveting unwarranted power.
Don’t let them win.
The Rest Is Up To You…
