The journey from a state of ‘Standard American Sickness’ to thriving and healthy isn’t easy.
Learning about what made you sick often feels like going down a rabbit hole of endlessly branching rabbit holes. Every time you answer a question, you simply reveal more questions.
I’ve had plenty of realizations, you could even say epiphanies, along the way…
realizing that refined seed oils (sunflower, canola, vegetable, etc) are harmful, inflammatory and exacerbating every pretty much every state of illness
realizing the value of low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diet as a therapeutic tool for reversing a range of illnesses, including diseases of metabolic dysfunction like type II diabetes
realizing that vegetables contain anti-nutrients, digestion inhibitors and can cause or exacerbate underlying inflammatory or auto-immune conditions, and that a plant-free diet can be extremely effective as a dietary healing protocol
realizing the body will naturally and spontaneously trend towards health if your provide the evolutionarily correct exposures and remove the evolutionarily inconsistent exposures
And more.
Lately I have dived down a new rabbit hole, that of blue light, quantum and circadian biology, and mitochondrial health. And if the proponents of this school of thought are to be believed, could be more important than diet and exercise as an environmental determinant of health.
Summarized extremely briefly, the quantum biologists (or mitochondriacs) have concluded that type and timing of light to which you are exposed throughout the day, especially artificial blue light and non-native electromagnetic fields (a type of non-visible, man-made light), has a critical impact on metabolism, mood, hormonal function and the likelihood of developing chronic disease.
Prolonged exposure to isolated blue light or non-native EMF disrupts your circadian rhythm, which is regulated by natural light exposure. Key to this disruption are your mitchondria, the energy-producing organelles inside your cells, whose function is directly regulated and influenced by light.
As I have written previously, the #RootCause of disease is evolutionary environmental mismatch. Diet, sedentary lifestyle, ingestion of industrial chemicals are all evolutionarily inconsistent environmental exposures. It makes sense that an artificial, evolutionairly inconsistent light environment would cause or contribute to chronic disease.
Artificial blue light is evolutionarily inconsistent
This also makes sense if we apply a historical lens. Similar to seed oils, advent of artificial light only came about in the late 1800s with the invention of the electric grid and the light bulb. Prior to that time the only sources of light in our environment were the sun, the moon and fire. Since then, we have contrived a massive number of sources of artificial light and non-native EMF – we have created franken-suns which we now stare at continuously. These technologies have been extremely useful in humanity’s civilizational progress, but they are profoundly mismatched to our evolutionary biology.
We evolved watching the morning sunrise, spending the entire day outside, then sitting and watching the the sun set. There was constant exposure to solar information that could regulate our circadian rhythm such that body processes like metabolism occur correctly.
Today, most people wake up in close proximity to their WiFi router, then immediately look at their phone screen (with colour temperature equivalent to midday sun). Throughout the day they are covered from the sun, spending the entire day under artificial light, perhaps wearing glasses or contact lenses. Their EMF emitting devices are never far from their body. They then go back to bed, SoyFlix on the TV emitting more blue light into their bedroom, falling restlessly to sleep. No bueno.
The Chief Mitochondriacs
The chief flag-bearer of the quantum health movement is Dr Jack Kruse, a Neurosugeon who has been studying and advocating for quantum health for the past 16 years.
Dr Jacob Montgomery is ophthlamic surgeon who was so blue-light toxic that he developed impaired fasting glucose despite being a regular cross-fitter and eating less than 20g carbs per day. He then healed himself with a protocol that put quantum biology and mitochondrial health at the centre of the paradigm.
Grimhood is holistic health guru/biohacker who overcame his own issues with epilepsy and neuro-psychiatric disorders and has been helping people with advice on twitter and patreon.
All of them are digesting and presenting the work of Dr Doug Wallace, the world’s foremost expert on mitochondria and the relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and disease. These gentlemen are at the top of their game — highly intelligent, highly curious and have deep understanding of the #RootCauses of disease.
The blue light rabbit hole
There are a huge number of topics within quantum health/circadian biology that get very technical very quickly – it is very physics heavy. For MDs or the technical layperson, I’d suggest starting here:
This talk is pretty dense and explains the key points surrounding circadian biology, mitochondrial function and the harms of blue light. I’ve listened to it twice already and will probably need several more listens.
For a less technical introduction, start with one a podcasts by Dr Kruse or read his blog at jackkruse.com. There is a massive amount of information there.
Stay tuned for future articles on blue light, circadian biology and quantum health as I begin to understand the topic better. Until then, follow the good doctors above and dive down the rabbit hole yourself.
Some of the steps you can take today to prevent and treat blue light toxicity are pretty intuitive if you think and act like a free range human…
expose your skin and eyes to the morning sun
expose your body to the sun throughout the day
wear blue-blocking glasses after sunset
eat a diet rich in DHA (seafood)
avoid close contact with sources of non-native EMF such as wifi routers, cell phone towers, etc
stop looking at your SoyPhone and go outside
The Rest Is Up To You….
